THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Title:  Heaven Falls Silent

‘There is Singing up in Heaven’ is my re-working of an old hymn by the American hymn writer Johnson Oatman.

When I first heard this old hymn at a small gospel meeting in the Scottish Highlands, I loved the words and imagery so much I felt inspired to write a new tune.  The words speak about that moment in heaven when even the angels who are ever praising God will fall silent as He takes time to hear the prayers of His people.

There are so many old hymns that are rich in imagery and deserve to be heard again today.  My hope is that by re-setting these words to a new tune, this old hymn can bring fresh inspiration for our worship.

“When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.” (Rev. 8:1)
